Who uses our services?
Children and adults with a physical and/or complex disability living in
Canberra and surrounding region. They could be people:
- born with a disability
- who acquire a disability through illness or an accident at any stage
of their lives.
What is a complex disability?
Complex disabilities can be physical and intellectual. They include disabilities
such as cerebral palsy, spinal injuries, epilepsy and sensory impairment.
What services and programs do we offer?
Residential Services
Provide accommodation and a comfortable home environment to people with
disabilities. This includes children and adults living in Canberra
and surrounding region.
A team of trained staff:
- provide 24-hour support, including overnight where required
- assist residents to reach their full potential
- encourage family involvement.
Respite Care Services
Provide facility-based respite care to people with disabilities. This
includes 24-hour care throughout the year. Staff are trained to provide
a range of support, including physical health care.
Respite care
is essential for people with a disability and their families who
usually look after them within their home. Carers sometimes need to take
a break from the physical and emotional demands of their role. Respite
allows them this ‘time out’ with real peace of mind.
The person with a disability also benefits from the increased social
activity available in a group house
Outreach Programs
Provide support and care for people who live in their own or family home.
Services range from a couple of hours a week to 24-hour care.
Support
includes personal care through to skills development activities.
It is provided by a trained team of staff who are responsive, reliable,
caring and flexible.
Community Programs
Enable and encourage people with disabilities to be involved with and
included in their community.
Community programs include:
Recreational
Program
Supporting
people with a disability to enjoy recreational activities of their
choice in the community.
Community
Access Program
Enables
people with disabilities, through a skills development program,
to acquire the skills they need to live in the community and obtain
greater independence.
Social
Participation Group: Cuisine Team
Enables people with disabilities to join a monthly social group
and enjoy
activities of their choice. Activities include dining out, bowling, movies
and barbeques.
Family
Governance Program
Supports
families in managing their own programs and make choices about their
son’s
or daughter’s lives. This includes vocational opportunities,
recreational support and living opportunities.
Accenture Assistive Technology Program
Helps those living with a disability to gain greater independence
by using technology to communicate with others and to establish control
within their own environment.
This program, funded by the Accenture
Australia Foundation, also enables people with a disability to enter
into, or return to, the workforce by providing technology and training
that allows them to perform a range of skills required at work.
The
Assistive Technology program has been running since 2005 and has
made a profound difference to the lives of many people.
